Ulrike Guerot: ‘Blame game’
German political scientist talks about how labour reforms have impacted Germany.
The Germans had an export party and the southern countries had a credit party and now nobody wants to pay. This is the problem.
Ulrike Guerot is a German political scientist and, in October this year, she became a senior associate for Germany at the Open Society Initiative for Europe.
Previously, Guerot was at the European Council on Foreign Relations’ (ECFR) German branch, headquartered in Berlin, as the representative for Germany and a senior policy fellow. From 2010 she led ECFR’s ‘Germany in Europe’ project.
Before that, Guerot was a senior transatlantic fellow with the German Marshall Fund, from 2004-2007, and led the EU unit of the German Council on Foreign Relations from 2000-2003.
Guerot regularly writes about and comments on EU-related issues for a wide range of publications and news outlets.
She spoke to Empire in Berlin as part of a panel to discuss the “blame game” directed by France at Germany. She also talked about how labour reforms have impacted Germany, and explained why the perception that Germany has loaned and “given so much” is an incorrect one.
