Judy Dempsey: ‘Not about German hegemony’
Columnist and senior associate at Carnegie Europe discusses the economic reality vs the outside image of Germany.
Judy Dempsey is a non-resident senior associate at Carnegie Europe, and has been a columnist at the International Herald Tribune (recently renamed as the International New York Times ) since 2004.
Germany is damned if it does and damned if it doesn't.
She is the editor-in-chief of Carnegie Europe’s Judy Dempsey’s Strategic Europe, which is a platform for commentary, analysis and policy recommendation from leading European experts.
In her weekly section “Judy Asks” , Dempsey poses a question to key European observers on a current issue pertaining to EU foreign or security policy.
Before joining the International Herald Tribune, Dempsey was based in Brussels, Jerusalem, and Berlin as a correspondent with the Financial Times.
She has contributed to a number of books, including Developments in Central and East European Politics (2007), and is the author of the German-language Das Phänomen Merkel (2013).
Dempsey joined a panel discussion in Berlin to talk about why Germany’s leadership will inevitably be criticised, what lies ahead with Angela Merkel’s third term in office, and the disconnect that exists between the “outside image of Germany” and the economic reality within the country.
