The former US secretary of defence reflects on the change he would like to see in the Arab world.
On this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, the former US secretary of defence talks about the war in Iraq, reflecting on whether he believes that the current wave of change in the Arab world is in any way related to the 2003 US invasion.
When asked how he reacts to criticism of the decision to invade Iraq, he stresses his belief that “the world is a better place without Saddam Hussein” and that the invasion was justified, despite the failure to find stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction – something he argues does not mean that US intelligence in the run-up to the war was entirely inaccurate.
On the current uprisings in the Arab world, he says:
| “I’m uncomfortable with the Iranian regime and the Syrian regime and wish that the people of those proud countries would have the kinds of opportunities that they see other countries providing for their people. I would be delighted to see the regimes in those two countries not be there.”
