It is facing perhaps the most daunting challenge to its stability since independence. Pakistan’s worst-ever natural disaster killed more than 1,700 people, left millions homeless, and caused damages worth billions of dollars.

Its troops are not only helping with flood relief but are also fighting the Taliban in volatile tribal areas.

Many have accused Pakistan’s intelligence agencies of protecting extremist groups and fomenting violence in neighbouring Afghanistan and India.
