Nacer Khemir

The award-winning Tunisian filmmaker and writer discusses his philosophies, his art, and his career.

Born near Tunis in 1948, Nacer Khemir has grown to identify with both Arab and Western cultures through the French language. 

His ability to tell stories through richly expressive visual styles and cinematography is respected by audiences around the world.

Rooted in the oral storytelling traditions of his childhood, Nacer Khemir’s inspiration is drawn from fantasy and children’s tales thereby blurring the lines between reality and imagination.

As a young student in boarding school, he remembers the liberating power of the screen during weekly film screenings.

Since then, he has grown into a modern-day renaissance man of the arts having received recognition for his efforts in writing, performing, theorising, multimedia artistry, and filmmaking.
