Sari Stories

An extraordinary insight into the hidden reality of rural India.

Watch part two

Sari Stories follows a group of young women from in rural Southern India, who have lived traditional lives as wives and mothers, working in the fields for a few rupees a day.

Now these women are being trained to become video journalists as part of an initiative to alleviate rural poverty.

We follow them making their community videos, and ask four of them to use their cameras to make video diaries of their own lives.

The film shows the hidden reality of rural India, a world of child marriage, child labour and domestic abuse. It also shows how some women use video cameras to challenge traditional ways of life.

Sari Stories can be seen on Tuesday, September 1 at the following times GMT: Tuesday: 0830 and 1900; Wednesday: 0330, 1400 and 2330.
