UN report slams Arab wealth gulf

Rich Gulf countries must do more to help their poor neighbours, a UN report claims.

Despite the oil-wealth in Gulf countries, 40 per cent of the Arab population live in poverty, according to a new UN report.

The report on human development in the Arab world warns that oil-rich countries in the region must do more  to help their poor neighbours – otherwise, due to growing unemployment and population growth, that figure will rise.

Do Gulf states have the capability or even the responsibility to help others in the region? If so, why should the burden fall on them? And what are the risks of inaction?

Inside Story, with presenter Hoda Hamid, is joined by Ahmad Moustafa, a project manager at the UNDP’s Arab Trade and Development Programme, Mahmoud Al-Iriani, an associate professor of Economics at Sanaa University, and Talal Touqan, an asset management specialist at Thomson Reuters.
