Sir David talks to John McCain, the former US Republican presidential candidate, about US foreign policy in Iran and Afghanistan, and to Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US ambassador to the UN, Iraq and Afghanistan, about the Afghan elections.

He speaks to sculptor Anish Kapoor about his new exhibition at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, Eduardo Montealegre, Nicaragua’s opposition leader, about the country’s political situation, and Martti Ahtisaari, last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, joins Sir David to talk about Barack Obama, the US president, and conflicts around the world.

This episode of Frost over the World aired from Friday, October 23, 2009.

John McCain

John McCain was the Republican challenger to Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidential election.

But his pairing with Sarah Palin fell short of the Obama-Biden ticket – and Senator McCain is now continuing his politics from the floor of the Senate.

He joins Sir David from his office in Washington to talk about US foreign policy, the Afghan elections, and the global economic crisis.

Zalmay Khalilzad

At a press conference earlier this week, Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, finally conceded that he had not won an outright majority in August’s presidential election, after the Electoral Complaints Commission uncovered widespread fraud.

Sir David is joined by Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan and counselor with the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, to talk about the Afghan elections and the upcoming runoff vote.

Anish Kapoor

For the first time in its 250 year history, the main space of London’s Royal Academy of Arts has been taken over by a living artist.

The Indian-born, British-based sculptor Anish Kapoor has filled the gallery with a series of huge, colourful and sometimes messy works.

He joins Sir David to talk about his art and the exhibition.

Martti Ahtisaari and Eduardo Montealegre

Martti Ahtisaari, Finland’s former president and UN mediator, was last year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner for working on peace in Namibia, Northern Ireland and Kosovo.

He joins Sir David to talk about Afghanistan and conflicts around the world.

This week Nicaragua’s Supreme Court ruled that Daniel Ortega, the Nicaraguan president, can indeed run for a third term as president.

It is a decision which has alarmed opposition groups: but it is not clear what they can do about it.

Sir David is joined from Managua by Eduardo Montealegre who ran for president against Daniel Ortega in the last election.
