Amanda Palmer hosts the gripping mystery thriller
Écoute le temps

This week, The Fabulous Picture Show hosts the gripping mystery thriller Écoute le temps from writer director Alanté Kavaïté.

The filmmaker and the star of the film Émilie Dequenne join Amanda Palmer and our audience at a Q&A to explain how they turned Kavaïté’s script, based on her own feelings of loss, into a richly cinematic film.

When her mother is murdered in her countryside home, film sound operator Charlotte (Dequenne) decides to visit the village to learn more about her mother’s life.

Faced with her mother’s hostile neighbours, and realising that the official investigation is going nowhere, she discovers an incredible phenomena – her mother’s house has stored the sounds of the past.

Charlotte begins to use sound equipment to record voices from the past and track down her mother’s killer.

Alanté Kavaïté wrote the main character Charlotte for Dequenne, who won the best actress award at Cannes in 1999. Kavaïté first watched her muse in the Dardenne brothers’ Rosetta and was impressed by her ability to translate inner emotions into intense expressions.

At the Q&A Kavaïté explains why she had a picture of Dequenne on her wall for a year before they ever met.

The Simpsons Movie

The Simpsons

After 18 years and more than 400 episodes, The Simpsons, the world’s longest running TV animation, is being turned into a movie, imaginatively called The Simpsons Movie.

All the main characters from the show – around 300 – will make at least an appearance in the film, about Homer sending contaminated water into the river and forcing the residents out of Springfield.

The Simpsons Movie is also seeping into global culture, as various real towns called Springfield vied to host the premiere, a giant image of Homer is painted on a British hillside opposite an ancient pagan symbol and Indian-Americans protest at a convenience store chain running a promotion based on the stereotypical Indian shopkeeper, Abu.

Against this backdrop of Simpsons’ madness, The Fabulous Picture Show visits one of the more unlikely places touched by the hand of Homer – Tabaka, Kenya.

With an official licence from the film company this remote village, known for its soapstone carving, is now making busts of the Simpson family.

Takva: A Man’s Fear of God

Takva: A Man’s Fear of God is the story of a devout Muslim man who is torn between his faith and his desire for worldly things.

The hard-hitting social drama, which was awarded the International Federation of Film Critics prize at this year’s Berlinale, is an example of the increasing number of Turkish filmmakers looking at the role of Islam in Turkey.

Amanda Palmer meets Ozer Kiziltan to talk about his first feature, which asks important questions about faith at a time when religion in modern life is the central issue in Turkish politics.
