Russians are voting in parliamentary elections that are expected to reassert President Vladimir Putin’s grip on power.

Opposition parties have accused the Kremlin of stifling their campaigns. The Kremlin is also accused of amending the electoral laws to prevent the opposition from winning seats.

Western countries, including the US, have criticised the electoral campaign. They claim the government is forcing millions of people to vote in a bid to ensure a big win for Putin’s party.

Foreign critics say Sunday’s general elections in Russia may be the least democratic since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Inside Story discusses the significance of these elections for Russia and how Putin is shaping the country’s political future.
