Palestinian statehood

We ask if a post-Annapolis Palestinian/Israeli peace deal is possible in 2008.

undefined

After seven years without any progress towards Middle East peace, Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, have pledged to launch immediate negotiations.

Their goal is to see the creation of an independent Palestinian state by the end of 2008. The US for its part pledged to closely monitor the progress of these negotiations and to make sure that any agreement will be implemented.

But amongst Palestinians and Israelis, the re-launched peace talks have been received with scepticism.

So, is a post-Annapolis Palestinian/Israeli peace deal possible in 2008? Or will it be yet another missed opportunity in the Middle East?

Inside Story investigates.
