Stephen Hadley: ‘Achieving objectives’
The former political adviser to George W. Bush discusses the legacy and lessons of the Iraq war.

Stephen Hadley was the former national security adviser for President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009. Before that, he served as the deputy national security adviser.
Hadley has also served as the assistant secretary of defence for International Security Policy for President George H.W. Bush and on the national security council staff of President Gerald R. Ford.
Currently a principal at international strategic consulting firm RiceHadleyGates LLC, along with Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates, Hadley serves on the state department’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board.
He is a director of the Atlantic Council, senior adviser on International Affairs to the United States Institute of Peace, and the chair of RAND’s Center for Middle East Public Policy Advisory Board.
He spoke to Empire about the case for striking Syria, and the legacy and lessons of the Iraq war.
