Phyllis Bennis: ‘Political cover’

The policy expert and author discusses the dangers of striking Syria and the US’ willingness to engage with Iran.

Phyllis Bennis is the director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies. In addition, she is a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam.

Bennis is on the steering committee of the US Campaign to End Israeli Occupation, of which she is also a founding member.

In addition, Bennis works with the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition and the UN-based International Coordinating Network on Palestine.

She has written eight books, including Challenging Empire: How People, Governments, and the UN Defy US Power and Ending the Iraq War: A Primer (2009).

Her most recent book, Ending the US War in Afghanistan: A Primer, was published in 2010.

She spoke to Empire about how striking Syria would be illegal, immoral and dangerous, the schism between Washington and the rest of the country, and the US’ new willingness to engage with Iran.
