David Kilcullen: ‘Syria’s breaking point’

Counterinsurgency expert David Kilcullen discusses the effects of foreign fighters on the Syrian civil war.

David Kilcullen is an expert in counterinsurgency, and the founding CEO and  president of Caerus Associates, a firm that consults on conflict, resources and governance.

Dr Kilcullen has been a soldier, diplomat and a policy adviser for the Australian and US governments. He advised US army General David. H Petraeus on Iraq and has advised Condoleezza Rice when she was secretary of state.

He has lectured on counterinsurgency warfare at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced and International Studies (SAIS) in Washington DC.

The author of three books, Kilcullen’s most recent work, Out of the Mountains (2013), examines conflict and warfare in coastal cities.

Kilcullen shared his analysis on the evolution of the conflict in Syria, and discussed the effects foreign fighters are having on the civil war.
