Alain Gresh: ‘France’s independent role’

Deputy director of Le Monde dipomatique discusses the lack of political will among the French elite.

Alain Gresh was the editor of Le Monde diplomatique for 10 years, between 1995 and 2005.

Since 2008, he has been the deputy director of the French publication.

Gresh specialises in the Middle East, and is the president of the Association of French Journalists, with a focus on the Maghreb and the Middle East.

His books and writings have been translated into English, Persian, German, Arabic, Dutch, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

He spoke to Empire about a lack of political will among the French elite, and how the French have diminished their role in the global arena.
