Raising taxes is meant to send a costly and therefore credible signal about Abe’s commitment to fixing public finances.

We return to Japan and examine the next phase of ‘Abenomics’, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe thinks about another increase in tax.

The minister in charge of Japan’s “Abenomics” project has signalled that a second increase in consumption tax will go ahead as planned, saying extra monetary and fiscal stimulus would ensure it did not imperil the country’s recovery.

It does seem an obvious way to raise money and bring down debt, but does the once-mighty Land of the Rising Sun have enough economic strength to deal with it? Al Jazeera’s Wayne Hay reports from Tokyo.
