West Africa: Voice of One’s Own
“There’s so much to be told about the stories here that you can only hear, I think, if you are also a minority.”
Growing up as a minority in Europe and the US meant that Al Jazeera’s West Africa correspondent, Nicolas Haque, had always felt a sense of “otherness.” But covering the French-speaking region made him realise he wasn’t alone in this experience.
Instead, he found a connection to a place and its people that went beyond words.
Based in Senegal, Haque takes us through his experience covering West Africa – a region determining its own voice and identity, and in turn, helped him to find his own.
