Bolsonaro's Brazil

A political earthquake is shaking Brazil, and its young democracy is at stake.

Brazil heads to the polls on Sunday to decide the country's next president.

The two candidates in the presidential runoff are very different: Fernando Haddad is a soft-spoken former academic from the powerful but discredited left-wing Workers' Party. He campaigned on the fumes of jailed former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva's popularity and is trailing behind far-right firebrand Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is where this election gets interesting, and some even say scary. His entourage is packed with the country's military, and he has promised a purge of left-wing politics.

The election comes during the country's worst-ever recession, and at a time where crime and unemployment rates are soaring. There's a lot at stake, and supporters on both sides are frustrated. Yet, one thing is clear: Brazil wants change.

In a new episode of The Take, host Imtiaz Tyab breaks down the elections with Al Jazeera's Latin America editor Lucia Newman.
