Trade union leaders led marches in Brussels, the Belgian capital, while the European Commission proposed tougher sanctions on eurozone countries that breach EU budget rules [AFP]
In Spain, protesters set fire to cars and hurled eggs at buses as strikes and demonstrations were held around the country [Reuters]
