Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian President, has asked for Sarkozy’s help in possible direct talks between Syria and Israel.
Technically, the two countries remain at war since Israel occupied the Golan Heights in 1967.
The Golan is a valuable fresh water resource, but it is under environmental threat. And as David Chater reports, that may put any political settlement under threat too.
