Europe signals tighter border travel checks

EU announces plan to allow states to close borders if they expect surge of immigrants.

    European Union interior ministers have announced a draft plan to allow countries to close their frontiers if they are expecting a surge of immigration.

    The move follows the mass migration of refugees from North Africa.

    The announcement has prompted concerns that it could undermine the ideal of free movement in Europe.
