Video: Thousands flee Greece fires

Greeks abandon their homes as wildfire guts thousands of acres of forest near Athens.

About 10,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes in a suburb of the Greek capital, Athens, as more than 70 wildfires continue to spread.

A state of emergency has been declared in greater Athens while France and Italy are sending in aircraft to help crews battle the flames.

The fires are close to the historic suburb of Marathon, just northeast of the capital, and threatening Pendeli, another suburb with a panoramic view of Athens.

    Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips reports.
