Spain‘s prime minister has proposed new laws which would pay immigrants lump sums to return to their native countries.

Almost 10 per cent of Spain’s population is made up of foreign immigrants.

In the past ten years, those low paid workers helped the country’s economy to boom.

But now that times are tough, many of them are losing their jobs – and so putting greater financial strain on the government, which has come up with a plan to pay people to head back home.

From Madrid, Al Jazeera’s Elsa Weill reports.
