26 killed in Latvia care home fire

Extreme cold hinders rescue efforts after the building's roof collapses.

The blaze caused the roof of the two-storeyed building to collapse.

It was not immediately clear what started the blaze.

Rescue efforts were hampered by extreme cold -- the temperature reached minus 25 Celsius - as several sources of water were frozen.

Veisa said firefighters were forced to dig holes in the ice to find water.

She said the care home had residents of all ages.
