Nine people were killed and a further 25 injured after a fire swept through a karaoke club in South Korea's southeastern port city of Busan, Seoul national broadcaster YTN reported.

The blaze broke out in one of the 28 rooms at the karaoke lounge on the third floor of a six-storey building on Saturday night.

The local Yonhap News Agency quoted police officials as saying that most of the victims died from inhaling toxic gases and smoke, which made it difficult for the people to find the exits. The victims included three Sri Lankan men, reported to be migrant workers.

Around 20 fire engines and 100 firefighters were mobilised to battle the fire, Yonhap News added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
