US president details three core elements in war plan for Afghanistan.

    US troops have been given just 18 months to defeat al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan before they begin to withdraw.

    Barack Obama, the US president, gave the exit date as part of his long-awaited announcement of the US strategy for the war in Afghanistan.
