Mayon locals forced to seek shelter

High alert in the Philippines as volcano activity intensifies, fuelling eruption fears.

The explosions at the Mayon volcano in the Philippines are growing more intense, with the area remaining on high alert for a major eruption.

Lava has been flowing from the dome for 10 days now and scientists are concerned a violent, toxic explosion could devastate the area surrounding the volcano. Meanwhile, many of the area's residents will have to spend their Christmas in shelters.

Al Jazeera's correspondent Marga Ortigas reports from Legazpi City, near Mount Mayon.
