The second, Shim Sung-min, 29, was killed on July 31.

The two deaths came as negotiations stalled over a demand by the Taliban that eight of its fighters be freed.

The Taliban had released two hostages in August as a goodwill gesture after beginning direct talks with the South Korean government.

All 19 others were freed last month and returned home on September 2.
