Statue of Liberty celebrates 125th birthday

French tribute to US values will get facelift next year after serving as beacon of hope for more than a century.

    The iconic Statue of Liberty, a gift from France in tribute to democracy and freedom in the US, has celebrated its 125th birthday.

    The monument became a symbol of hope for millions of immigrants due to its prominent location in New York harbour, near Ellis Island, where newcomers were processed upon arrival.
