Video: Rio relishes Olympic bid win

Rio de Janeiro will be the first South American city to hold the Olympic games.

Delirious scenes in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, as the Olympic games go to South America for the first time in history.

The announcement made by the International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen to host the 2016 games in Brazil followed a plea from the country's president to redress what he called an imbalance seeing the games go only to Europe, North America and Asia in the past.

Brazil triumphed over cities like Madrid in Spain and Chicago in the US despite a strong pitch from Barack Obama, the US president, for hosting the prestigious event in his home town of Chicago.

    Al Jazeera's Roger Wilkison reports.
