One case underscores the racial divide of the US segregated past – that of the Little Rock Nine.

In 1957, after the US supreme court ordered the desegregation of schools, nine black teenagers enrolled in an all-white high school in the capital of Arkansas and were barred from entering by the state’s governor.

The US president of the day stepped in and the students attended the school.

Al Jazeera spoke to one of those nine students and got his thoughts on seeing a black president elected in his lifetime.
