The number of reported sexual assaults in Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott, has tripled in the last year.
But rape convictions in the north-west African country remain rare.
Charity groups say it is because judges are poorly educated about sexual violence, and outdated laws make it difficult to bring rapists to justice.
