Puerto Rico: Senate says new governor is illegitimate

Pedro Pierluisi was sworn on Friday but the Senate filed a lawsuit saying he is illegitimate unless it confirms him.

Puerto Rico’s government is paralysed.

The Senate has decided to delay the vote to confirm an interim governor.

It will now wait for its Supreme Court to decide if Pedro Pierluisi, who came into office on Friday, is eligible to take office.

This comes after a scandal and weeks of protests forced his predecessor to resign.
