Modi vows to take India to ‘new heights’

The prime minister and the BJP won the last election with a landslide victory and the first majority-led government since 1984.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to take his country to new heights, after leading his party to a landslide re-election victory.

With most of the 600-million votes counted, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has secured a large majority in Parliament.

This gives Modi a powerful mandate to implement his nationalist “New India” vision, which promises a strong economy and a more influential role in international affairs.
