Inside Tajikistan: The front line of the war on drugs
While Tajikistan says it has been able to control the situation, the UN drug agency accuses it of not doing enough.
Drug smuggling accounts for almost a third of Tajikistan‘s economy, some international reports estimate.
The Central Asian country has been in the front line in the global war on illegal drugs as tonnes of heroin, opium and cannabis are smuggled from neighbouring Afghanistan every year.
Though Tajikistan claims to be in control of the situation, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), as well as the United States and European governments, accuse it of not doing enough.
