Sri Lanka's Rajapaksa assumes duties as PM

Mahinda Rajapaksa started work on Monday, signing off his first document as the country's new prime minister.

    Sri Lanka's new prime minister has officially started work after his sudden appointment triggered a political crisis.

    Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is replacing Ranil Wickremesinghe, who says he still has majority support but is unable to prove it, as the current President Maithripala Sirisena suspended parliament.

    Al Jazeera's Minelle Fernandez reports from the capital Colombo.
