UN secretary-general to appoint Geir Peders as Syria envoy

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has informed the Security Council that he wishes to appoint the veteran Norwegian diplomat Geir Pedersen as his special envoy for Syria.

Norwegian Diplomat Geir Pedersen is set to take over as the United Nations special envoy for Syria.

He has the unenviable task of leading negotiations to end the complex seven-year war.

His predecessor, Staffan de Mistura, announced he was stepping down earlier this month.
