South Africa: Calls to ban apartheid-era symbol

History, offensive or hate crime? South Africa debates banning its old apartheid-era flag.

    South Africa's new flag, designed to represent the "Rainbow Nation", has almost completely supplanted the previous, apartheid-era flag, but some South Africans worry about the context in which the old flag is still flown and want to ban its display.

    The Nelson Mandela Foundation, which wants the apartheid-era flag banned, saying it represents hate and racial discrimination.
