Britain's main opposition party has announced a major policy shift on Brexit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he now backs the UK staying in a permanent customs union with the European Union, saying it is necessary to protect trade and avoid a hard border with Ireland.

Pro-European MPs have welcomed the move, but the government says it is a cynical attempt to frustrate the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
