The author of a critical book of US President Donald Trump is standing by his work, saying it was based on about 200 interviews.

Publishers of the account of Trump's first year in office released the book early, ignoring a legal challenge from the president to prevent its publication.

Michael Wolff, the author of Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, says Trump has no credibility.

Trump has branded the book "phony" and "full of lies".
