US broadcaster NBC News has fired the popular host Matt Lauer over a sexual harassment allegation.

He is the latest in a growing list of high profile men in media, entertainment and politics to lose their jobs over harassment accusations.

The recent cases of sexual harassment and assault allegations have swept over Hollywood, Congress and the airwaves, claiming the jobs of Lauer, Fox's Bill O'Reilly and CBS morning news presenter Charlie Rose.

The allegations have cost Hollywood producers and TV newsmen their jobs, but on Capitol Hill the reckoning has been mild.

    Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports.
