Deadly storms batter Melbourne, Australia

Tens of thousands of people are still without power a day after storms battered the Australian state of Victoria.

At least one person was killed on Sunday as winds gusting up to 120 kilometres per hour tore across the region.

The majority of the damage caused by the storms was due to falling trees.

A number of storms have slammed southern and southeastern Australia over the past few weeks, some of which have brought significant rain and flooding to South Australia and Victoria.

The wet weather has softened the soil, allowing the most recent storm to tear down more trees than usual.

A number of people, including two Country Fire Authority workers, were injured by falling branches.

The winds were particularly strong around the international airport and the Grampians, to the west of the city.

The storm forced the closure of one of the runways, leading to lengthy delays for travellers.

More showers are expected across the state over the next few days, but the winds have now eased.
