Thousands of people are making the dangerous crossing from Turkey to such Greek islands as Kos and Lesbos in a desperate bid to reach Europe.
Some are trying to make their own way across the Aegean Sea to avoid dealing with human smugglers. But due to inexperience, they face many frustrating and life-threatening incidents.
Still, they say they are ready to fail thousands of times to reach Europe where they expect a better life.
Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith spent a night on Turkey’s Aegean coast and met some of those preparing to make the attempt.
