Barzani: Referendum to be held after ISIL defeat

Peshmerga’s success against ISIL reignites Kurdish ambitions for independence.

The President of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region Massoud Barzani has recently stated there will be a referendum on independence when ISIL is defeated.

Last year, Barzani postponed the long-planned vote saying the focus would instead be on working with Baghdad to wipe out the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.
