Afghanistan’s election commission said one of its officials escaped unharmed after a suicide bomber targeted his vehicle in the capital, Kabul, killing his bodyguard and wounding his driver.

The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan identified the target of Saturday’s attack as Hawliya Rodwal, its Kabul provincial director.

“A suicide attacker detonated his explosives and as a result the driver of the behicle was killed and the other person in the vehicle was wounded,” Kabul police chief, General Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.

Commission spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor said one of Rodwal’s security guards was killed and his driver wounded. He said a number of homes were damaged in the attack, which took place in a residential neighbourhood.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban are opposed to elections and have targeted the commission in the past.
