Flooding swamps Portugal’s Algarve

Southern Portugal has been slammed by strong winds and heavy rains, flooding parts of the popular tourist region.

The storms brought winds of up to 80 km/h and delivered 100mm of rain to Faro airport. This is more than is expected in the entire month of October.

One of the worst hit locations was the seaside town of Albufeira, where a number of residents had to be evacuated as the water levels rose.

The flood levels reached 1.5 metres in some places, submerging cars and flooding bars and restaurants.

The weather system is going to continue to affect the region on Monday and conditions are expected to stay unsettled until Thursday.

This will bring more wet weather to the area, but the heaviest of the rains will be across eastern Spain, while the worst of the flooding in Portugal should be over.
