Syria’s heritage sites bear the brunt of war

Hundreds of ancient sites in Syria have been looted, damaged or destroyed during the continuing conflict.

From ancient markets, to world famous mosques, hundreds of landmarks have been affected by the fighting.

The United Nations says 24 cultural sites in Syria have been completely destroyed.

The place where most heritage sites have been destroyed or damaged is the old city of Aleppo.
