Tribute paid to slain French Muslim policeman

Ahmed Merabet, a policeman killed in attacks on Charlie Hebdo offices, had very different Islamic views than assailants.

French President Francois Hollande has pledged that his country will “never yield” to “terror” while honouring three police officers killed during the attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper.

One of those officers, Ahmed Merabet, a French policeman of Algerian origin and a Muslim, has been in the spotlight due to the fact that he shared a similar cultural background of the assailants, yet had a very different interpretation of Islam, especially since he saw no contradiction between his French identity and faith.

Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Phillips reports from the Paris suburb of Bobigny, where Merabet’s funeral was held.
