New York’s super-slim skyscrapers face unique challenge

In a city where every square foot counts, towers are being built with increasingly narrower bases.

    The 432 Park Avenue building is Manhattan's soon-to-be the tallest residential tower. Its engineer, Silvian Marcus, is behind much of the Manhattan skyline.

    He tells Al Jazeera that the challenge in Manhattan isn't necessarily the height, but the width of the building.

    In a city where every square foot counts, towers are being built with increasingly narrower bases. This presents a unique problem when engineers design a tower to resist movement in the wind.

    Al Jazeera got exclusive access to one of 432 Park Avenue's $95m apartments to learn the hazards of building a skyscraper that is nearly 1400 feet tall.
