Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has had a prostate operation in a Tehran hospital, according to state news agency IRNA.

Media reports on the state of health of Iran’s top leader are rare.

The IRNA report described Monday’s surgery as “routine” and said it was successful.

“I am going to hospital to undergo an operation. There is nothing to worry about,” Khamenei was reported as saying.

“This does not mean that people are not praying … but it is a normal operation.”

Aged 75, Khamenei has led Iran for 25 years after in 1989 replacing Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Holding the highest political position in the country, Khamenei has final say on state matters.
